What It Was Really Like Staying at the Iconic Plaza Hotel in NYC ✨
In this post we're talking all things Plaza Hotel, what it was like, if it's worth it, and everything in between.
For as long as I can remember, I dreamed of staying at The Plaza because of famous movies like Home Alone 2, Bride Wars, and The Great Gatsby. As a hospitality student who’s stayed in countless hotels, I’m excited to share my honest thoughts about my experience here.
Plaza History
Let’s start with a bit of background and history. The Plaza is a U.S. historical landmark and an iconic hotel, making multiple appearances in well-known American movies. They’ve also hosted high-profile guests like F. Scott Fitzgerald, former U.S. presidents, and the Beatles, to name a few. This landmark is over 100 years old, has gone through multiple renovations, and has withstood the test of time. The history on its own is a great reason to stay here.

First Impressions
From the moment we arrived at the Plaza, we instantly felt like royalty. We were dropped off on their famous steps that lead to their grand revolving doors, making a show-stopping entryway. The plaza’s exterior alone is captivating and is simply a preview of the beauty the hotel has to offer. Before we left our car, the doormen eagerly rushed to help us with our bags and directed us to check-in. Since we had an early flight, they accommodated an early check-in, which earned them high marks in my book. All the staff was extremely kind, welcoming, and professional upon arrival. We decided to stay in August for my birthday and had perfect weather. This time of the year was right for us because we beat those NY holiday crowds. If you know, you know.

Room Details
We booked the Deluxe King bedroom, which was exceedingly ample for two. Our room featured a built-in bar area, two closets, a full-length mirror, and a desk. The room’s convenient features made it the perfect size for two guests. I have stayed in my fair share of hotels, so I am critical about the cleanliness of a room, but our room truly felt spotless. All rooms come with their famous monogrammed robes and personal slippers, a detail I loved. I wish I could have brought the Plaza robe back home with me. The bathroom design and details did not go unnoticed. The 24-karat gold doorknobs, shower heads, and soaking tub left me speechless. The interior of the rooms is something to appreciate, giving you that “old money” feeling. Staying at The Plaza means you expect one of the best sleeps of your life, which I did. I’m usually not a fan of hotel beds, but these were so comfortable that I slept like a baby.

Location & Things To Do
The Plaza is located at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Central Park South, making it a great location if you want to be close to Central Park. This area has lots to do nearby and easy access to public transportation if desired.
With so much to see and do around The Plaza, here are some spots we loved visiting during our stay:
Central Park
Central Park is one of the few places both tourists and locals enjoy. Please don’t miss out on everything this beautiful park has to offer.
Window shopping down Fifth Avenue
Fifth Avenue is the perfect place to go shopping in NYC. Don’t skip the iconic Tiffany’s on Fifth!
Ralph’s Coffee (888 Madison Ave, New York, NY 10021)
Ralph’s is one of my favorite coffee shops in NYC. There are various locations throughout the city, but this location has an attached RL store, making it much more special.
The Met (1000 5th Ave, New York, NY 10028)
I’ve been here multiple times, and there is still something new to see each time. Its extensive collection will keep you busy most of the day.
Central Park Zoo (Located by the Southeast corner of Central Park between 63rd and 66th)
The Central Park Zoo is the perfect activity to escape from the city. It’s quaint and has multiple outdoor views, giving you many opportunities to enjoy nature.
Ladurée (864 Madison Ave, New York, NY 10021)
Laudrée is a charming Parisian-themed pastry shop that specializes in macaroons.
Interiors
The architecture and interior of this place are noteworthy. From the Palm Court to their seasonal flower display (incredible, by the way), there is much to appreciate here. Their rotating displays have to be one of my favorite Plaza touches. If you pay close attention, you will notice their signature Plaza logo in hidden places like their doorknobs, elevator floors, etc. If you aren’t a guest at the hotel, you are welcome to see the seasonal displays. Guests and tourists alike enter through the Fifth Avenue entrance. During our visit, they had a black-and-white arrangement set up that was breathtaking, as usual. Their Christmas displays are worth mentioning because one thing NYC does well is the holidays. You can expect a calmer environment during their “off-season,” although there’s no such thing in NYC.

Dining & Room Service
The Plaza offers three dining options for guests. The Palm Court, In-Room Dining, and The Champagne Bar. During our stay, we ordered room service, which is offered 24/7, a nice touch for those late-night cravings. While I appreciated the convenience of In-Room Dining, I felt there were some areas for improvement. The presentation was nice and brought up within a reasonable time, but the flavors didn’t quite meet my expectations. To be clear, the food was not bad, I just expected a “wow” factor given everything at this hotel is superb. The Palm Court and Champagne Bar seem like they make up for mediocre room service. I would be more than open to returning to try these two spots, they looked fantastic.
The hotel charges a daily fee of $65, called the Urban Experience Fee. You can use this as a food and beverage credit for any dining options they offer or in the spa. The fee is mandatory and charged daily, so it’s nice to use it to your advantage.

Ammenties & Plaza Perks
One memorable experience was the in-house car service in their Mercedes-Maybach. A couple of things to take note of, this service was on a first-come, first-served basis and only offered Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Lucky for us, right as we requested our car downstairs, the driver was pulling in, and we were able to get a ride to The Met. The service is meant for anywhere within a 10-block radius. Although it's not guaranteed, I would try to experience it. In general, getting around in New York by car can add up quickly, so I thought this was a thoughtful perk for those staying at the hotel. Our car was also fully stocked with water, mints, and hand wipes, a nice detail I appreciated.

What is the verdict?
This was an experience I had dreamed of for a long time, and The Plaza didn’t disappoint. It’s the perfect stay for a special occasion like a birthday or anniversary. I wouldn’t come back casually just for a stay in New York. Remember, no experience will ever be perfect, but the Plaza comes close; you get what you pay for. If you enjoy history and timeless interiors or attentive service, I recommend this place to you. It is a luxury experience and worthwhile if that’s your kind of thing.
If you’ve stayed or dreamed of staying here, I’d love to read your thoughts! Stay tuned for more hotel reviews. Thanks for being here and supporting my writing. Till next time!
